Hello, sweet peas!
I did threaten you with English posts, did I not? Well, if you are not ready yet for some glorious English then I’m very sorry but I’ve been hanging out at Rhianna’s blog and I want in on the fun of “What are you reading”-Wednesday. I know that there are plenty of things like this out there in the German bloggerverse too but I like this one. It’s so sophisticated. 🙂 By the way if you find any spelling or grammar errors you are free to keep them. I give them to you if you promise to take good care of them.
Ta-daa! I’m reading “The Hobbit” at the moment.
1 – Why did you decide to pick up this book – cover or content?
Various reasons to be honest. Most of you know that I got to read Harry Potter because I wanted to read LotR but my brother said “That’s not for you, puny nine-year-old!” and gave me HP and the Philosopher’s stone instead. I was never interested in LotR again. Well, truth is…it’s not only because my clever, well-read older brother told me not to read it. Of course not. I had my mom’s copy in my small hands as soon as they turned their backs on me. But the problem was… nine year old me didn’t get very far with the fellowship. I didn’t understand most of it and I was kind of pissed that my brother was right so I never told anybody that I actually tried it and never picked it up again.
Then the boyfriend™ loves the movies and I tried to watch the first “Lord of the Rings” movie but after the first few minutes I was already confused and decided “Nope, I gotta read the books if I ever want to get anywhere with this”.
So I’m reading it out of spite really. I wanna prove the world that I’m (at almost 26) not too stupid to understand this world. Seriously. I can do it. And it’s not too hard, so far. 🙂
2 – Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
Although there are 15 people on this journey so far and they have done some travelling I don’t know too much about them. So I guess I pick Bilbo. Maybe because of his love for food. But probably just because I know most about him.
We also know a little bit about Gandalf but I’m not sure I like him. He seems quite detached and is randomly disappearing. Why is he ever with them on this quest? He could have given Thorin the map and lead them to Bilbo and be on his way? What’s in it for him? He certainly doesn’t care about the Dwarfs or the treasure too much…
3 – Will you finish this one?
Hell yes, I will! I can do this! I can do this! I can do this!
4 – Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of… (other books, movies, tv shows…)
…nothing really. It’s one of a kind. I have never seen anything like it and I never will. (Is that the correct answer LotR fans? I’m not getting shot? No? We’re good? Phew. XD )
5 – What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down…)
Slow but interesting puts it very well. I mean I guess there will be more action in the future. There is a lot of complaining about the travelling conditions. Right now they were captured by goblins. That’s quite thrilling. I kind of feel like when I read “The wizard of Oz”. Like there are occurences neatly stacked one after another. There is no flow yet. Or I’m just not feeling it yet. But I want to finish this book and I feel like it has the potential to amaze me.
Your English is perfect!! Seriously, I don’t spot a single error!
Your reason for picking this up cracked me up! 😂 Incidentally, my boyfriend is a big LOTR nerd, and I was always a Harry Potter girl, so we’ve been introducing each other to our fandoms 😂 I need to read this series still though. Let me know what you think when you finish too! Your point about Gandalf seeming a bit flaky intrigues me especially!

Thank you so much! I had so much fun writing this. 🙂
The boyfriend™ loves the movies but still hasn’t read the books. Did you watch the movies? I was so confused after a few minutes because the whole rings for the elves and dwarfs and humans made no sense to me. 😂
I will always be a Potterhead though. I just love this world. ❤

Love this!!! The Hobbit is such a great adventure, and Tolkien inspired so many more fantasy writers after this that it’s worth the work to trudge through the world building and slow spots. The motive behind Gandalf is always interesting… I think it’s one detail the LOTR movies did good with – he enjoys the adventure… not necessarily the end point… and isn’t that a great lesson? Enjoy the journey, no matter where it might lead. Thanks for joining us this week!

Hi, Marissa!
Thank you for your kind words. ❤ So you say the reason Gandalf is there is because he loves the journey and the adventure? That's interesting. I thought he might have a higher motive. I can't quite grasp him yet.
I had great fun with this and I'm sure joining you guys again. 🙂

Yes, you did it! Hooray, an english post! 😀
Well, well… are we some sort of twins or what? xD I simply couldn’t get into LotR when I was a kid, then my boyfriend told me over and over again to read the books because he thinks them to be the greatest books ever written. So I tried … and failed during the second book. Now I think about giving it another chance… just like you are. The best of luck to us both, then. We can do it! 😀
Lots of love,
Ida

Awww, that’s so sweet of you, Ida! ❤
I like the Hobbit so far. I'm a little slow though. So much is happening and I'm wondering if I should read something easier in between. But I'm definitely faring better then so many years ago. XD
Good luck to you too! I'm sure you can do it. Are you gonna start the whole series anew or just the second book?

That’s great! I think I’ll be very, very slow, too – his writing as well as the plot is packed with details, so reading slowly might actually help catching smaller cues. 🙂 I think I’m gonna start the whole series anew… there’s so much I’ve forgotten, so if I do this, I’ll do it right. 😀
Lots of love,
Ida

Muss ich jetzt auch auf englisch antworten? 😉

Keep on going! 💕
Hugs back und so. 😉
